The artist that I am

I never mentioned being an artist in my blog. Although I have posted about fashion. My husband and I both used to paint, and I always tried to convince him that fashion was a major art form. One of my oldest and most desired goals has been to write a fashion history book. Something lovely that delves deep into the creation of fabrics and accessories. I love to wonder about these things. How knots and laces, and velvet and beads and sequins all came into being was revolutionary, if not evolutionary. Ingenuity is my delight.

But I am also a painter. Plus I've been doing some digital work so I will add a picture or two. But I had wanted to kind of, because I am interested and also love to share, break down some of the art and artistic process, because it is similar to what I had in mind for my fashion book, perhaps it will be a good help to me to plan that. At least I can engage in checking it out if a book materializes or not.

I made neat things and it was so easy. Digital collages that I loved. I was shocked. But then it occurred to me that there are elements that I have not had to make use of and know about that are built into these apps that have been a major help to me.

For instance, the shape and size of photos is already defaulted, as are the color changes to photos to make them "cool", which is good for me because I never took color theory and it isn't a natural instinct of mine. So I can play with a neat picture and then crop it into another and a lot of the elements of design that are less human are taken out of the arrangement. Things like size and format, and some of the objects and how the program already puts them together by what it has been created to find appealing to the eye.

What I mean is that this is an old tried and true design principle from ancient times that I don't have to worry about at all. Phew.

But there is a modern design principle that is made use of and is one of my favorites. I have been wanting to list, for myself, the things that made the biggest impact on me from college. Nothing that landed me in the CEO's chair. lol

The modern design principle that I am talking about is Gestalt. There are several important elements that I learned, and I forget sometimes the terms but never the use because my brilliant teacher who I adored, a young woman, used such great projects for us. One for all we really needed to know. I have made my children do them! (and where I failed in class, I excell in apps, because the apps know)

Gestalt principles:

This illustrates the principles too! Awesome!

I usually only remember similarity and continuity, but last night I was seeing ground.

Alright, I will share my art, lol
