Baby Blues

As cute and sweet as a new little baby may be, new moms are often unable to get around having some hormonal fluctuations after pregnancy. These hormonal changes can have a surprisingly wide range of effects, most are mild, but some can be severe and long lasting.

Although post partum hormonal issues generally come on after the birth of the new baby, sometimes they can happen during pregnancy. The most common post partum complications are feelings of anxiety and depression.

The mildest and most frequently occurring issues after birth are called "baby blues". They effect 70-80 percent of women. Occasionally a new mother will experience post partum depression. The lasting and more intensified symptoms of anxiety and depression effect 10-20 percent of women. These women may need to seek treatment.

Rarely, women will experience post partum psychosis. This rare disorder can cause paranoia and may result in the mother becoming disoriented and negligent.

Because post partum hormones affect such a large number of women it is important for mothers to be aware of the possibilty that they may experience some anxiety and depression symptoms when becoming a new mom. Having a support system and plan in mind in the event that you develop some form of these issues can help to lessen their intensity and help to lower the risk of developing a more severe condition.
